MEAD MEDICAL IS A PRIVATE BILLING PRACTICE

FEES

Medicare rebates have not kept pace with the rising costs of running a medical practice. Medicare rebates only increased between 1.2% to 2.5% from 1995 to 2012, and 2012-2017 almost all MBS rebates were frozen with no increase. This has resulted in there being a significant shortfall between money we receive from Medicare and the costs required to run a practice such as wages, rent, consumables, insurance amongst many other things. This is why practices are no longer sustainable when bulk billing patients for services provided.

Traditionally practices have guided GPs as to what they feel appropriate fees should be for services provided however due to ATO laws this is no longer possible.  ALL GPs are independent contractors and are required to set their own individual fee structures and billing methods.  The practice is required to follow their instruction.  This is why you will now experience varying fees dependent on the GP you see. Please speak directly to your regular GP if you have any concerns or queries in relation to your fees.
